Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games when he was young. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little while and headed to New York to participate in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were tough as he would play many hours and do not win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he possibly could improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus more on the game.
The real advancement in his game happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would frequently challenge each other. Howard was able to access some of the greatest players in chess.
