Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he enjoyed betting on numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he played many hours and lost most times. He earned some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He believed he possibly could boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and concentrate even more on the game.

The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would frequently play against one another. Howard had access into a few of the best players in chess. Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the strongest women players the poker arena ever. Howard moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the following 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
