Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he liked gambling on various card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were difficult as he played many hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on poker.
The definite improvement in his skills began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would regularly play against one another. Howard was able to access a few of the best players in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his strategic thinking techniques. Howard used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.
Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. He told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker arena today. Howard relocated to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in money games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
